Snook Bite is on….

The Tampa Bay Fishing Report for March is in. It was a month of relatively warm temperatures and wind – which is pretty typical. Water temps are still hovering in the low 70s due to some coolish nights. The snook bite has been nothing short of stellar. While they’re not all huge fish, they are plenty big enough to keep the rods bent nicely. There have been a few redfish in the mix as well. I’ve been trying to hit afternoon high tides when I can fish my favorite areas. We’re not fishing tight to the mangroves most of the time. I’ve been finding the fish off of the mangroves by sometimes 50 to 75 yards. It really depends on the conditions. I’ve been fishing along the south shore of Tampa Bay between the Little Manatee River and Bishop’s Harbor. I’ve been using whitebait when it’s been available. What I refer to as Spanish sardines have been extremely plentiful at the Skyway, and they’ve been working every bit as well as whitebait. For me, whitebait has been quite the challenge on all but a few trips. Seems like it’s very off and on. I suspect that will change as we head into April. It has not been on the typical markers up in the bay as of yet – at least not that I’ve seen. Artificial baits are working really well when live bait doesn’t cooperate. I still fall back to the Gulp shrimp, 3″ in pearl white when bait is tough. If it swims. the Gulp shrimp will catch it.

I look for conditions to continue to improve and stay strong into April. Cool fronts will still blow through, but the biggest problem will be the wind, not the cold. If you can handle slightly rough conditions, the fish are ready to eat. Give me a call and let’s get something booked before the summer heat arrives. Tight lines and stay safe out there.
